How do I get an interview call?

The waiting period is tough, how do you stay positive and wait for the interview call. Although you would have applied for multiple job opportunities but really hope to crack at least one of them. This is how you do it:

  1. Wait: Play the patience game

You don’t want the recruiter to perceive you as desperate. Give them two to three weeks to get back to you.

  • Know the jobs or positions you have applied for

When we receive a call from recruiter often, we sound very confused, we may not even remember the job opportunities we have applied for. Maintain a tracker which contains:

  • Position applied- Job title and Company name
  • Some basic information- Job description, location, salary range (if specified), other relevant information mentioned on the job posting.
  • Date of application
  • Shortlisted on
  • Interview on (date, time and venue)
  • Feedback after the interview
  • If you are shortlisted, what do you do?

As soon as you receive a call or email that you are shortlisted for a job, you need to:

  • Reply to the email or call- It could mean the recruiter is looking for some more information, seeking a clarification or may be just an information email or call informing the next steps in the recruitment process. You will need to reply with a day or two to the recruiter unless obtaining the information may take some more time then you will need to revert mentioning that you would require x number of days to revert.
  • Be courteous during the call with the recruiter or even when replying to the email.
  • If the recruiter provides you with information regarding the first level of interview, then take down the details. Feel free to double check with the recruiter at this stage, missing out or hearing incorrectly will just be flip-flop situation later.
  • If you receive a call from the recruiter, take time out from your work to answer the recruiter. You could reply by:
  • Could you hold on for just two minutes?
  • When would be the best time I can call you back?
  • Find a quite space in your home or office to speak to the recruiter.
  • Take down notes of the communication, you have had with the recruiter.
  • Concentrate only on the conversation.
  • Please do not multi-task as you may miss something important.
  • If you do not receive any information for two weeks, you need to:

If you have the recruiter contact details, you could quickly do a follow up call or send a follow-up email. It may be that the recruiter was on holiday or busy with some other priorities and just missed seeing your job application.
