Understanding human nature is complicated. How do we do this?

How do we analyze emotions:

  • Observing other individual’s behavior
  • Focus on unspoken or non-verbal communication
  • Watch out for sign language, gestures
  • Recognize display of positive and negative emotions
  • Watch the eye, mouth movements and body posture
  • Interpretating facial expressions
  • Recognize happiness, sadness, frustration, anxiety, stress and anger.

How to improve your emotional intelligence

§Put down aside your digital gadgets like mobile, laptop, tab.

§Try to counteract the negative emotion with three positive ones.  

§Improve your social skills

§Ability to read nonverbal cues by engaging in face-to-face communication on a daily basis.

§Ask a close friend or family member – someone you know and trust – to read your emotions. Their answers can be surprising and insightful. Sometimes other people know us better than ourselves.

§Don’t back away from uncomfortable or negative feelings in yourself or others.

§If you feel sad or angry, take a deep breath, step back and think about why you are feeling this way.

§Listen to your body – a knot in your stomach may be stress, or a fluttering heart may be attraction or excitement.  

§Keep a journal or record of your thoughts and feelings.
