Post an interview: Follow up

  • Is a follow-up essential in a recruitment and selection process?
  • When is the right time to follow up?
  • Who do you follow up with?
  • Do I call or email the recruiter?

Don’t think twice and do follow up with the recruiter (s) after the interview as you will be surprised at the insights you may potentially receive.

  • Is a follow-up essential in a recruitment and selection process?

Yes, it is important to follow up after an interview for the following reasons:

  • To receive feedback about the interview.
  • Just a closure to the interview process.
  • To stop the waiting game.
  • Establish a rapport with the recruiter so if this position doesn’t work out, there might be another position the recruiter might offer you to consider.
  • You might assume you are getting an offer for this position and probably halt your job search.
  • To know if you are shortlisted or selected for a position.
  • To determine if the position is still open or closed.
  • When is the right time to follow up?

A thank you email will be a nice courtesy close to the interview process. It will also act as a reminder to the recruiter to let you know interview feedback. This feedback can be used to strengthen your positives and improve your negatives.

  • Do I call or email the recruiter?

By follow up, this does not mean to drive the recruiter/ interviewer crazy with your endless follow up calls and emails. You could write or call the recruiter (s) after 2 weeks of your interview. This will give the recruiter (s) enough time to consolidate and shortlist a candidate.

Email vs Call

You could either email or call the recruiter, there isn’t an explanation to this. Email is a more formal approach then a phone call but think this through.
